Entertainment writers Lachlan Guertin and Rachel Choy discussed their thoughts on the film.

Klara and the Sun, a film based on Kazuo Ishiguro’s critically acclaimed novel, has been torn apart by critics, with a low 27% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie follows an outdated android model named Klara, played by Jenna Ortega, who is befriended and purchased by a sick teenager, Josie.

The film is set in a dystopian world where people can use genetic engineering to advance in society, causing an extreme class divide. Despite its interesting premise, the movie has received negative reviews, with many critics feeling that it did not live up to its potential.

Disappointing Adaptation

Entertainment writers Lachlan Guertin and Rachel Choy discussed their thoughts on the film. Guertin stated that he enjoyed the first half but felt that it dipped in quality toward the end. Choy agreed, saying that the movie dragged heavily in the middle and did not seem to know what genre it was.

Guertin also felt that the connection between Klara and Josie could have been built up more, and that the movie’s pacing was slow. Choy added that the ending was not as devastating as she had expected. Both agreed that the film struggled to balance its themes of technology, power imbalances, and grief.

Despite the negative reviews, both Guertin and Choy praised Jenna Ortega’s performance, with Guertin saying it was a smart choice for her to take on the role after her success in Wednesday. However, they both felt that Amy Adams was underutilized, and that her character’s backstory could have been explored more.

Missed Opportunities

The world-building in the film was also discussed, with Guertin saying that it was interesting at the start but did not go far enough. Choy added that the movie could have made more commentary on the world and its themes, but instead relied on throwaway comments with no substance.

Guertin said that he is glad he watched the movie, but would not watch it again. Choy agreed, saying it is not necessary to see it in the cinema. They both felt that fans of the book or the cast might enjoy it, but others might want to skip it.

The film’s failure to deliver a satisfying experience is a notable aspect of its release, with Guertin and Choy both expressing disappointment at its lack of impact. Klara and the Sun is currently in theaters, but its box office prospects are uncertain.
