Selfridges returned to profitability before taxes last month.

Last month brought sweeping shifts in ownership, executive leadership and retail expansion within the beauty sector, alongside a wave of new brand introductions. Retailers experienced contrasting outcomes, as some posted financial improvements while others pursued aggressive growth strategies. Selfridges returned to profitability before taxes, whereas Superdrug undertook a major store renovation. Meanwhile, Space NK both refreshed its product lineup and welcomed new management, while Boots introduced a rebranded marketing approach.

Sephora Partners with M&S

Marks & Spencer and Sephora will establish a shop-in-shop concept called “Sephora at M&S” beginning in spring 2027, initially in select locations and on M&S.com before expanding to 100 UK stores by next year. This collaboration will position Sephora’s premium beauty offerings within M&S’s high-street and retail park locations, creating a new shopping experience for customers.

Leadership Transitions

Space NK announced that CEO Andy Lightfoot would step down effective September 13, with Emma Simpson-Scott assuming the role. Lightfoot had joined the company in 2016 as Global Digital Director before being promoted to CEO in April 2019. The transition places Simpson-Scott at the helm after serving as Chief Marketing Officer for more than seven years.

Boots named Alex Baldock as its new CEO on September 2, following the departure of Anthony Hemmerdinger. Baldock previously led Currys and was confirmed for the role in May. Concurrently, the retailer launched its first major campaign under new CMO Charlotte Lock, emphasizing a unified brand identity across all marketing channels.

Superdrug reopened its newly renovated Merry Hill location in the West Midlands, now the largest store in its UK network at 12,831 square feet. The expansion created 15 permanent positions and will add 10 seasonal roles for the holiday season.

Touchland expanded its UK presence by launching 18 products across all Space NK stores and its website on September 29. This marks the US-based brand’s most extensive international rollout to date, featuring hand and body care alongside accessories.

THG reported a 7.2% revenue increase to £828.7 million for the six months ending June 30, exceeding its 6.5% guidance. The company, which owns Cult Beauty and Lookfantastic, attributed the growth to new brand launches and rising demand for K-beauty products.

Designer Bella Freud entered the beauty market with Glamorama, a collection developed in partnership with Boots. The range includes lip oils, hand care products, hair accessories, a compact mirror, and a fragrance spray, extending Freud’s fashion aesthetic into mainstream beauty retail.

New Beauty Brand Launches
